NUS LGBT+ Campaign Awards 2018


Each year at our liberation conferences, we hold an awards ceremony, in which we celebrate the incredible activism students are involved in throughout the year.
   
The six awards categories for the LGBT+ awards are:

  • LGBT+ Campaign of the Year
  • LGBT+ Event of the Year
  • LGBT+ Society of the Year
  • LGBT+ Society Development of the Year
  • LGBT+ HE Student
  • LGBT+ FE Student


LGBT+ Campaign of the Year: Winner
Awarded to: Queen's University Belfast Students' Union LGBT+ Society, and Belfast Trans Resource Group
Awarded for: “Beyond the Binaries” a campaign to raise awareness of the differences between gender identity and sexual orientation and celebrate the amazing talents of non-binary staff and students.

LGBT+ Campaign of the Year: Runner-Up
Awarded to: Katie Adams and Tom Simms, Northumbria Students' Union
Awarded for: Their amazing guide to “LGBT+ culture in the North” for welcome week. It was really popular with over 500 copies flying off the shelves.

LGBT+ Event of the Year: Winner
Awarded to: Leeds Beckett Students' Union
Awarded for: “Campus Pride”, celebrating LGBT+ Pride on campus through a staggering number of activities. From sexual health testing to fundraising for African Rainbow Family; panel discussions and glitter gods body art.

LGBT+ Event of the Year: Runner-Up
Awarded to: University of East Anglia Students' Union LGBT+ Officers
Awarded for: “Sports Night Does Colours”. A campaign fostering unity between sports clubs and LGBT+ students by collaborating with the weekly sports night and a bi-annual LGBT+ club night in the students' union.

LGBT+ Society of the Year: Winner
Awarded to: King's College London Students' Union LGBT+ Society
Awarded for: Gaining the largest membership the society has ever had (over 400 new members this year) and transforming their students' union and campus for LGBT+ students. They held a staggering 91 events in the first three months of 2018 including a Queer Valentine's Ball.

LGBT+ Society of the Year: Runner-Up
Awarded to: Durham Trans Association
Awarded for: Outstanding strides in supporting and representing trans students and transforming their students' union and university by working with them.

LGBT+ Society Development of the Year: Winner
Awarded to: Durham Trans Association
Awarded for: ‘properly’ creating the society so they were able to create and instill policy to campaign for trans students.

LGBT+ Society Development of the Year: Runner-Up
Awarded to: Liverpool Hope LGBTQIA+ Society
Awarded for: pushing their university to have a trans+ protection policy for staff and students, and educating staff and students on LGBTQIA+ issues.

LGBT+ HE Student of the Year: Winner
Awarded to: Hatti Smart, Royal Veterinary College Students' Union
Awarded for: Their tireless work as an active campaigner on campaigns against cuts and mental health provision on campus. They have also been instrumental in a campaign that raised over £2000 for LGBT+ homeless youth.

LGBT+ HE Student of the Year: Runner-Up
Awarded to: Ethan Levi Cain, Herriot-Watt University Students' Union
Awarded for: Being an ambassador for LGBT+ students through campaigning and support of trans rights.

LGBT+ FE Student Student of the Year: Winner
Awarded to: Amy Smith, Sheffield College
Awarded for: Supporting liberation campaigns and officers in creating an LGBT+ charter for students and their college whilst campaigning for estranged students and LGBT+ homeless students.
