HR Committee

In order to achieve our aims, effective oversight of our Human Resource is essential. The HR Committees supports and assists the NUS to make sound human resource decisions and advise the Boards on appropriate courses of action in this area
The HR Committee considers, makes decisions and gives recommendations on a range of subjects. This includes strategic oversight and responsibility in the following areas:

  • Staff Recruitment and Induction;
  • Training and Development of Staff;
  • The setting and monitoring of HR procedures and policies;
  • Continuity planning;
  • The organisation’s staffing with Audit, Risk and Remuneration benefits for staff


Membership of the HR Committee is drawn from members of the NUS Joint Boards as well as up to two additional members to provide specific expertise.

NUS National President

Larissa Kennedy

As president, Larissa will chair the NUS board, leading NUS from transition into reform and completion of a three-year turnaround programme.

Larissa has been in the student movement since they were 16 years old and has served on NUS’ National Executive Council. Larissa has organised against sexual violence, marched against student fees and is a member of the Black student’s campaign. Larissa wants to build a movement that stretches across the whole of the UK, across students’ and trade unions across the world.

Hillary Gyebi-Ababio

Hillary believes that education should be free, accessible and open to all, with students from all backgrounds and identities being able to engage with and shape the education they deserve. She wants students to be at the centre of their education, not viewed as metrics in a market. She will be fighting for an education system that puts students first.

Sarah Kerton

Sarah Kerton is the director of the Guild of Students at University College Birmingham. 

In her spare time she plays bass for Ajah and supports West Bromwich Albion football club.

I help the public to tell their stories, build community and drive the change they wish to see through campaigning. Previously I’ve worked in Higher Education including as a sabbatical officer at City, University of London. I’m interested in journalism, tech for good, and coffee.

I’ve been involved with SUs since the first term of my first year at the University of Essex. I’ve since held staff roles at a number of different SUs in London and the South East. I’ve been at Birkbeck SU for three years now as CEO and I’m also a School Governor at the Logic Studio School in Feltham.

Heidi Flanagan

Head of Student Insight and Enhancement, University of Winchester

I have worked in HE for 9 years, and I am also a part-time doctoral student. I am a former Trustee of Winchester Student Union and a present Trustee of the Association of University Administrators (AUA). I enjoy working with organisations that invest in their people, and I strongly believe that respecting colleagues through HR strategies, policies and procedures creates a virtuous circle of long-term benefit. I like music, NASA and walking my dog.
