The NUS, RCN, RCM and Unison have jointly written to Edward Argar MP, Minister of State for Health at the Department of Health and Social Care and the Minister for Welfare Delivery, Will Quince MP in the DWP. We have written to ask for urgent clarification on the interaction of various social security payments and the new training grant for healthcare students. We do not want to see the government giving money to students with one hand and taking it away with another. We have asked them to urgently ensure that the new training grants are disregarded in full when claims for financial support are made by students in receipt of benefits and that this is explicit in the Department for Work and Pensions and Housing Benefit regulations, so that local decision makers are clear how it should be treated.
