LUU bar in the running for two design awards

Leeds University Union tasked interior design company Nanu Group (fellow Leeds Alumni) to transform their dated bar space into a slick, modern and multifunctional venue.

The brief: To create a day-to-night experience that would cater for the ever-evolving student demographic with zones to study and sustainability at the heart of the design while retaining a fun and youthful vibe for socialising.

Nanu set to work to come up with a design that would rival other Leeds city centre venues, curating diverse artwork representing different cultures and genres, giving visual stimulation and an inclusive dimension.   A bronze shattered mirror ceiling, bespoke octopus light and 7ft metal booth arches are just some of the standout features while upcycled furniture in rich colours injects warmth and personality in to the space.

One of the key objectives was to minimise waste generation to the extent that the need for a skip was eliminated.  Most of the old materials removed were repurposed in other areas of the university and any furniture that couldn’t be upcycled found a new home at the Northeast Autism Society in Newcastle. 30% of the new furniture made has been produced from 100% consumer plastic waste to further reduce environmental impact.

The bar and seating lights were crafted from end-of-life fishing nets that were transformed into ultra-low carbon engineering grade Nylon 6, on to which pendants were 3D printed.  LED lighting and motion sensors (PIR) were also installed making this a true display of sustainable design.

The bars transformation has redefined campus life, attracting a broad demographic of students and competing with high street establishments in relation to style, quality, service, and atmosphere.

And it’s not just the students of Leeds who have recognised this vibrant and inviting space.  The Terrace Bar is on the list of finalists for two prestigious awards: The Northern Design Awards which will be announced on 16 November and the Mixology North Award for design and sustainability to be unveiled on 30 November!
