Background to the PPL Opt-In Scheme
NUS Services have had a negotiated discount deal in place with PPL since PPL successfully obtained a restriction on Section 67 of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act (1988) that previously provided a blanket exemption from PPL licensing of publicly performed music in Students’ Unions- this restriction on S.67 came into force on 31 October 2003 and Students’ Unions have needed to pay PPL fees since this date. On 1st January 2011 Section 67 was repealed in its entirety so that the charitable exemptions affecting Student Unions in respect of PPL fees will no longer apply.
NUS Services has renegotiated a further one year extension to the Opt-In Scheme with PPL taking us through to August 2021 with discounts applying to all licensable use, and the guidance notes seeks to outline the best approach to ensure that you are operating a venue that is fully compliant with the law, and that you are not over-paying. All Credits as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown will be provided.
