Elections

Every year, our member students’ unions have the opportunity to set the direction through the election of NUS-USI leadership.  This year delegates will elect one full-time officer – the president – as well as three part-time members of the regional executive committee, one member of the NUS UK national executive council to represent NUS-USI, and two student advisors.

NUS-USI president

This is a full-time paid position based at the NUS-USI office in Belfast.  The president leads NUS-USI in its mission to promote, defend and extend the rights of students, and to develop strong students’ unions.  The NUS-USI leader sits on the National Union of Students (NUS) national executive council as well as the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) national council. 

Nominations for this position opened on Wednesday 30 January and will close on Wednesday 13 March at 2pm.

NUS-USI regional executive committee

There are eight part-time officer positions available on the NUS-USI regional executive committee.  These are further education officer, welfare officer, women’s officer, LGBT+ officer, disabled students officer, black, Asian & ethnic minority students officer, campaigns & citizenship officer, trans students officer and sustainability officer. 

The women’s officer position will be elected at NUS-USI women’s conference on 12 February 2019; LGBT+ officer at NUS-USI LGBT+ conference on 13 February; disabled students officer at NUS-USI disabled students conference on 14 February; trans students officer at trans students conference on 19 February; and black, asian & ethnic minority students officer at BAEM conference on 20 February 2019. 

The further education officer will be elected at FE conference on 21 February 2019.

Nominations for the positions of NUS-USI welfare officer, campaigns & citizenship officer and sustainability officer opened on Wednesday 30 January 2019 and will close at 2pm on Wednesday 13 March. 

All elections will take place on the second day of conference.

Training for the newly elected regional executive committee will take place on 8-9 June 2019.  The term of office is 1 July 2019-30 June 2020.

NUS UK national executive council 2nd place

The NEC 2nd place is NUS-USI’s second representative on the national leadership council for NUS on a UK level.  This person, along with the NUS-USI president, represents students and scrutinises the work of leadership at the UK level of the National Union of Students.  This position is a part-time unpaid volunteer.

NUS-USI student advisors (two positions)

Two of the three student places on the NUS-USI advisory board are vacant and will be elected as a block at conference.  An NUS-USI officer, former officer or lay advisor is not eligible for appointment as a student advisor.

The student advisor term of office is two years, commencing on 1 July 2019.  A student advisor will serve a maximum of one term.  Training will be provided for student advisors.
