We’re currently working on the urgent, immediate issues facing students and students’ unions.
In autumn 2019, a small number of unions were inspected by HMRC who in their assessment changed their interpretation of guidelines relating to food provision in bars. We’ve created a number of tools to help affected students’ unions garner support and further insight which will help us collectively challenge HMRC's approach. This will also help us raise the profile of the needs of students' unions during the covid-19 crisis.
In this section you will find:
- a general letter template any students' union can use to write to their MP asking that they are financially protected throughout the crisis.
- a more specific letter for those who have a live case outstanding with the HMRC relating to VAT.
- freedom of information request templates for unions to use so we can better understand HMRC's decision making. issues that some unions are facing following a shift in interpretation of HMRC guidelines. As such there are two versions of the letter you can adapt and send to your MP.
You can also see the letter NUS has written to Financial Secretary to the Treasury, The Rt Hon Jesse Norman MP, asking for urgent action on these issues, here. We have not yet received a response.
