Information for voters
All student delegates registered for NUS-USI Conference 2020 will be able to vote in elections. Any changes a member students’ union wishes to make to its nominated delegates must be received by the NUS Events team no later than Friday 7 February at noon.
All voting will take place online, which requires all delegates to be registered with their individual PREFFERED email address. Delegates will be issued their ballot via email. Delegates must provide the correct email address to their students’ union when registering.
Candidate information and manifesto questionnaires will be circulated to delegates in advance of the elections.
Voting for the NUS-USI President will open in advance of conference on Monday 23 March at 09:00 and close Tuesday 21 April at midday. Delegates may cast their ballot ahead of conference and will be able to change their vote at any point until polls close.
Steering committee elections will take place during the NUS-USI Conference 2020 with key timings announced then.
There will be an information session held for potential presidential candidates on Tuesday 11th February 2020 from 10am – 11am. As this meeting will be conducted via skype, any interested persons must email email@example.com to request a skype link. This will be an opportunity to go over the process of elections, discuss the manifesto questionnaire and ask questions.
An online question time for candidates will be held in the weeks leading up to conference. Delegates will be able to find out more about the candidates, ask questions, and listen to the discussion in their own time.
All elections will run on the UnionCloud software. Delegates will be able to change their vote at any point up until the close of polls on Tuesday 21 April at midday..
It is really important that delegates check you are able to vote before the close of polls. Even if you don’t plan to cast your vote until the conference itself you should check your voting link, ensure we have the right email address and that you can access the site to vote. If you get in touch with us in advance of the conference it is easy for us to resolve issues and to support you to be able to cast your vote, however this takes a bit of time so is difficult to do as we approach the close of polls. We therefore ask that delegates report all technical issues 24 hours before close of polling – Monday 20 April midday.
Information for potential candidates
Becoming a candidate for NUS-USI President
There are three stages to becoming a candidate in an NUS election. These are:
1. Determining eligibility
2. Gathering information for voters (manifesto questionnaire)
3. Submitting an application
- Determining eligibility
Candidates must be a current student or sabbatical officer at a students’ union which is an affiliated member of NUS-USI.
Candidates also need to be nominated by other students or officers from member students’ unions in Northern Ireland. Nominations must include: three nominations from students or sabbatical officers in three different member students’ unions. Only one nomination can come from the candidate’s students’ union. Nominations must be a mix of Higher Education and Further Education students/officers i.e. at least one FE and at least one HE nomination
- Telling Voters about yourself
Candidates should prepare information about themselves, which NUS-USI will distribute to all delegates ahead of the election. This includes:
- A head and shoulders photograph
- A 100-word statement answering the question: Why do you want to represent NUS-USI students as their President?
- Links to the candidate’s social media accounts
- Manifesto questionnaire
None of the above information is mandatory; it is however beneficial for both the candidate and the delegates. Submit this by the deadline for submitting the candidate application. Any information received after the deadline cannot be guaranteed for inclusion.
Candidates will submit answers to their manifesto questionnaire at the time of application. NUS-USI will hold a candidate briefing Friday 6th March at 14:00. The candidate briefing is mandatory and will explain the election process, the role and expectations
