Shakira's Diary | Convention and Key Dates

Monday 04-03-2019 - 10:38

The publication of NUS’ motion for reform is imminent. In the build up to National Conference I wanted to use this week’s email to talk about some of the things to look forward to in the coming weeks.

NUS Convention

NUS Convention is taking place at The Union, Manchester Metropolitan University, on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 March.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with NUS Convention it is the event for senior and commercial staff in student’s unions to talk about our movement’s work in trading.

This is the event for everyone who is interested in: making more money in their students’ union; finding out more about our work in TOTUM and Trading Support; and shaping students’ union support in a post-reform NUS. We’ll also be having a celebration as we host the Best Bar None Awards.

There’s also important decisions to be made on our services and an opportunity for students’ unions to submit items for discussion at our Annual Participants Meeting

Your students’ union has until noon on Tuesday 12 March to register. You can watch the video and find the agenda, joining instructions, and registration link on NUS Connect.

Independent Review of the Teaching Excellence Framework - Get involved

The government has launched the Independent Review of the TEF. The TEF has been controversial since it was introduced – it judges teaching quality by the salaries that you go on to earn, among other things – and this is our chance to change it.

If you can’t submit your response by today’s midnight deadline, you can answer the one key question below and explain your answer contacting

  • Should the purpose of TEF be to provide information to students, or to help Universities (and other HE providers) improve the quality of their provision?

Dame Shirley Pearce, the Chair of the Review, is personally inviting you to get involved. You can do this by attending events we’ve set up with the Department for Education; Friday 8 March in Leeds and Wednesday 13 in London. You don’t need to have a high level of knowledge of the TEF to take part, so make sure you register. You can also read our response.

National Conference

As a further reminder there’s a number of deadlines coming up for National Conference. You can find all the information you need on our Conference Hub and remember to check out our guide on how to register as “A N Other” if you don’t have the name of your delegate yet.

Students who Gamble

This week we launched our in-depth research into gambling on UK. More and more students are turning to gambling, many using their maintenance loans and losing more than they can afford, as they try to support themselves through their studies. Check out the results of our survey into how and why these numbers keep increasing, as well as Eva’s statement on why these statistics can seriously affect student welfare.

Calling all tutors – join us at Lead & Change!

Do you have the passion and skills required to join our team of amazing Tutors who are helping to shape the next generation of student officers at this year’s Lead and Change? We are recruiting from Monday March 4 until March 31!

The dates for Lead and Change this year are:

Tuesday 23 to Thursday 25 July @ University of Bath

Tuesday 30 July to Thursday 1 August @ Leeds Beckett

Please email with any questions.

Students against sexual harassment

This week, your Women’s Officer, Sarah, has been championing the campaign against sexual harassment and violence on our campuses. If you missed her on BBC Radio 4’s Women’s Hour on Tuesday, you can catch up with what she had to say here.

LGBT+ Conference

The countdown is over and it’s almost time for this year’s LGBT+ conference. I’m so excited to see what fantastic ideas and visions delegates will be putting forward for liberation campaigns this year. If you’re going along as a delegate, please remember to double check your emails and our website for all the essential info and follow all the action #nuslgbtplus19

Finally, we’ll be releasing more materials on reform in the coming days, so please make sure you are checking Connect.

In unity
