At the NUS Wales Students with Disabilities conference in Cardiff today, students have elected Piers Wilkinson as their Students with Disabilities Officer 2016/17.
The Students with Disabilities Campaign is the autonomous campaign for all students in Wales who self-define as disabled. The campaign represents those students’ interests as part of NUS Wales and campaign locally and nationally on issues that affect them.
The role of the Students with Disabilities Officer is to act as the campaign’s figurehead, serving on a part-time basis for a year, and sitting on NUS Wales National Executive Committee.
Speaking after the election, Piers said he was looking forward to taking campaigning back to the grassroots.
At the NUS Wales Students with Disabilities conference, students discussed their experiences of being students with disabilities in Further Education and Higher Education in Wales. They also debated polices that are due to lapse, including one on the provision of sufficient mental health support.
The other positions that were elected during Conference were:
- Steering Officer – Stephen Marshall
- Committee member (FE place) – Rhiannon Llewellyn
- Committee member (Open place) – Samuel Pritchard
Tomorrow, we move on to the NUS Wales LGBT+ Campaign conference.
