Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union pick up the Small and Specialist Students’ Union Award at this year’s ceremony.
Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union have received the Small and Specialist Students’ Union Award at this year’s NUS Awards.
Over the past twelve months, the union has put student opinion at the heart of what it does by examining individual responses from the NSS survey, the FXU Student Survey, student experience survey, student polls, student rep data and actively engaging with students through it’s own ‘Woodlane Walkabouts’ and ‘Feedback Fridays’.
The union has gathered quantitate feedback from 2,772 members (around 47 per cent of it’s members) and qualitative feedback from 1,242 students (20 per cent) which mandated their attention into enhancing the student voice.
They now benefit from 245 student reps, have on average 84 per cent more clubs and societies than other universities and 104 per cent more volunteers than other small universities. The latter two stats boil down to the union offering one club or society per 69 students and that one in every 14 students has volunteered with the FXU.
What the winners said:
'It’s incredible that the work we’ve put in this year, and over the past three years we’ve been nominated, is finally being recognised. The whole team are engaging students on so many levels and we have the highest level of volunteering within the Russell Group - we’ve doubled our fundraising total this year. This is the icing on the cake for the best year we’ve ever had.' - Catherine Thornhill, President Community and Welfare at Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union
What the judges said:
‘Innovative and creative approaches are delivering tangible improvements and results for FXU, underpinned by strong and accountable student leadership.’
Four other students’ unions also featured in the shortlist of nominees for the Small and Specialist Students' Union Award, with the University Campus Suffolk Students’ Union being named runner up.
The NUS Awards are an annual celebration of the enormous work which students’ unions, officers and staff do. For more information about the other NUS Award winners from the night, please visit www.nusconnect.org.uk.
