Let's talk about active citizenship in HE

Tuesday 21-02-2017 - 16:34

NUS and Guild HE partner up for a one-day event focussing on active citizenship.

The conference, ‘More than Just a Degree? Active Citizenship in HE’, takes place Woburn House, London at Monday 13 March (10.30am-4.15pm) and is designed for both students’ union staff and officers.

Rob Young, NUS Vice President (Society and Citizenship), will be giving the keynote speech and will be joined at the event by West Streeting MP and Professor Margaret House, Vice Chancellor at Leeds Trinity University.

The event builds on ‘Active Citizenship: The Role of Higher Education’ - our recent joint report with Guild HE which explored what it means to be an ‘active citizen’ and how universities and students’ unions can support students to become more engaged in these activities.

On the day, we will hear from case studies showcased in the report and explore how unions, volunteers and institutions can all work together to empower and inspire their students to become active citizens around the themes of:

  • Volunteering
  • Democratic Engagement
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Global Citizenship

The conference is free to attend for students’ unions, and lunch will also be provided on the day.
