It’s a wrap! NUS-USI conference round-up – Day 2

Thursday 22-03-2018 - 10:59

Conference season at NUS-USI is now officially closed for 2018.

Day 2 at conference saw the passing of several much-debated motions with valid points made both for and against topics such as integrated education, trans inclusivity and the big B-word!

Mike Day and Ian Williamson led a session on Brexit, speaking on the new immigration bill and summarising the process of leaving and the expected impacts on Northern Ireland.

Conference then had the opportunity to put questions to a political panel including Karen Mullan (Sinn Féin), Daniel McCrossan (SDLP), Tanya Jones (Green Party) and Gerry Carroll (People Before Profit Alliance).

Olivia Potter-Hughes was delighted to be re-elected as NUS-USI President and said ‘It’s a massive honour to have been re-elected to be the lead voice for students in further and higher education all across Northern Ireland.

‘These are very challenging times and students and young people need to see decision-makers take action to provide them with hope that they can have a good future if they stay in Northern Ireland. I will be working to ensure that students’ voices are heard loudly and clearly by decision-makers, and I will be applying pressure to try and ensure that more money is invested in further and higher education here, to deliver more opportunities and increased financial support for students’.

Jessica Elder from QUBSU was elected to steering committee, John-Daniel Armstrong from Belfast Met SU was elected welfare officer, Stephen McCrystall from QUBSU was elected campaigns & citizenship officer and Kevin McStravock from UUSU was elected second NUS-USI position on NUS NEC.

As regards steering awards, Shauna McGeoghan and Chloe Burnett, both from NWRCSU won best speech, and Emmanuel Giwa from Belfast Met SU won the best delegate award.

We look forward to welcoming returning and new members to the NUS-USI Conference 2019...In the meatime, we wish all those attending National Conference next week in Glasgow a safe journey and happy conference!  Take a look at the photos from the Gala Dinner held on Tuesday night here.
