Happy International Women’s Day!

Friday 08-03-2019 - 15:08

Happy International Women’s Day! Since its adoption by the United Nations in 1977, International Women’s Day is marked across the world in celebration of Women, and in acknowledgement of our contributions to society.

To mark international Women’s Day this year and to celebrate some of the amazing achievements of the women’s campaign over the years, we’ve had a gander about the NUS Archives and will be sharing with you some of the amazing campaigns that have been led by the women students in Scotland. Follow us on #WomCamThrowback

In a similar vein we will be gathering some of the amazing women who have contributed to these campaigns as Women’s Officers at NUS Scotland at our Women’s conference on 4 April. They will be sharing stories from their hay-days as activists in the student movement and their thoughts on the present and future of feminist activism in Scotland. So if you’ve not already registered for conference you can do so here.

NUS Scotland Women’s Campaign has a proud history of campaigning for gender equity across our society. From campaigning for access to contraception, childcare provision in colleges and universities, the introduction of blind marking and so much more. We’re proud of the work we continue to do with partners across the sector to combat Gender Based Violence and to support the intersectional approaches to gender and race equity in Scottish education. If you are a woman of colour and would like to support this work, please respond to our survey here.

We are most proud of the amazing students who have been at the forefront of this work on their campuses and in their local community. Our movement would be nothing without your continued innovation and commitment. Yes, we have made progress, but it’ll come as no surprise, that our work is far from over and our fight for liberation continues.

Today we celebrate, so happy International Women’s Day, and have a great Women’s History Month. Here’s a quick link to some amazing event and campaigns happening throughout the Month that you could get involved in.
