Five Ideas… what you shouldn't miss at Students’ Unions 2015

Monday 15-06-2015 - 14:53

NUS’ flagship event of the year is fast approaching and with the programme now online, we thought we’d highlight five things you shouldn’t miss at Students’ Unions 2015 in Bolton.

Bringing together over 700 officers, union staff, industry experts and policy analysts, Students’ Unions 2015 will have nearly one hundred hours of workshops, seminars, discussion panels and networking.

1. Students leading on divestment: making institutions move their money

Students are taking action in campuses across the UK to lead campaigns to demand that their institutions disinvest in fossil fuels. Join James Randerson, Editor at the Guardian and Georgie Robertson, President at SOAS to hear about huge wins in Glasgow, Oxford and Bedfordshire.

When? Tuesday 7 July, during Workshop Session 2 (2.30 – 4.00pm)

2. Class unconsciousness: is there a two tier student experience?

Trish McGrath, Head of Student Voice at Manchester Students’ Union and James Robertson, Union Development Consultant at NUS will be discussing the impact of widening participation in education.

Do students ‘stick to their own’? Does engagement with activities and decision making vary with socio-economic status? Do students only make friends with those from similar communities or backgrounds?

When? Wednesday 8 July, during Workshop Session 3 (10.30am – 12.00pm)

3. Craftivism workshop with Katie and Rosie

Described as ‘a worldwide movement that operates at the intersection of craft and activism’, this one is for the yarn-bombers, radical potters and ceramic rebels. Join NUS’ resident Craftivists on the evening of day one in an in interactive workshop in using craftivism on your campuses to engage students in issues and activism. We will be using the example of divestment and campaigning against fossil fuels and will provide the necessary materials.

When? Tuesday 7 July, during our evening activities (7.30pm)

4. Tackling Lad Culture and sexual harassment on your campus

In 2015 Exeter Students’ Guild ran the #NeverOK campaign on their campus, educating their students on sexual harassment and challenging unacceptable behaviour. They join the National Strategy Team on Tackling Lad Culture and NUS’ Campaigns Managers to share experiences, learning points and show how SUs can use audits to help develop their own strategies.

When? Wednesday 8 July, during Workshop Session 4 (3.30 – 5.00pm)

5.The annual Students’ Unions Conference fun-run

And finally, for those that prefer their evening activities to be at a much faster pace, we will again be holding a 5km fun run/walk on Tuesday evening.  If you would like to participate, please bring your own running kit and meet by the info point/registration area.

When? Tuesday 7 July, during our evening activities (7.30pm)
