Candidates for NUS Vice President (Union Development)

Wednesday 24-02-2016 - 16:01

The period of nominations for the position of NUS Vice President (Union Development) has closed and we can now announce the candidates standing for election.

The candidates for the position of NUS Vice President (Union Development), who will be elected during NUS NUS National Conference, are as follows:

Richard Brooks

I've spent the last year delivering for students' unions, through students’ unions, for the students we represent. But I know NUS still isn't what we need it to be. Our politics are out of touch and divisive and we are not focused enough on students' unions. We’re getting better but it’s not good enough.

I'm re-running because there's loads that has been done - on student opps, on reforming NUS & on #LoveSUs, but the job's not done, and niether am I.

Sahaya James

As an unpaid FE college President, I had to fight for my union to exist, let alone get it properly resourced – while my college tried to expel me. As an activist, I’ve organised big national demos for free education. And as a member of the NEC, I’ve held our full-time officers to account.

I’ve done all of this without a penny from NUS, and with almost no central support. That’s because NUS has the wrong priorities: we have an NUS that is obsessed with brands and networking. What we need is an NUS that engages its mass membership, and gets the basics right.
