GCSE u-turn: a huge win for students

Undoubtedly, you will have heard about last week’s u-turn by Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for education, on GCSE reform. Gove had planned to scrap GCSEs in favour of EBCs (English Baccalaureate Certificates). The EBC scheme, announced in September for introduction in 2015, would have focussed on the ‘core’ subjects of English, maths and sciences, with the intention to introduce history, geography and languages to the scheme at a later date.
