On Tuesday 1st November, the UK Parliament will debate a Bill which will criminalise squatting. This will make student sit-ins and occupations in residential property (such as halls of residence) illegal. This will also criminalise many homeless and vulnerable people who squat to avoid sleeping rough.

She questioned how government thinks people can plan for their future career if significant cuts are made to student support.

Student movement welcomes progress on nursing allowance

Following a recent meeting with the Health Minister in which NUS-USI suggested that he should safeguard the book and uniform allowance for nursing students which he said would be scrapped, NUS-USI President Adrianne Peltz has said she’s pleased the Minster will now provide the allowance for the 2012 intake. The Minister has today announced that the one-off book and uniform allowance worth £190 will now be provided for anyone starting in 2012.

Peter O’Neill is also a former President of Queen’s University Students’ Union and originally came from the Dungannon area. NUS-USI President Adrianne Peltz has expressed disgust at the Health Minister’s announcement today that nursing and midwifery bursaries will be significantly cut for students starting courses in the coming days. The Minister announced that annual bursaries will be cut by almost 15% from £6055 to £5165 and the book and uniform allowances will be scrapped for students commencing study from 2012 and beyond.

Undoubtedly, you will have heard about last week’s u-turn by Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for education, on GCSE reform. Gove had planned to scrap GCSEs in favour of EBCs (English Baccalaureate Certificates). The EBC scheme, announced in September for introduction in 2015, would have focussed on the ‘core’ subjects of English, maths and sciences, with the intention to introduce history, geography and languages to the scheme at a later date.

NUS-USI Women’s Officer Aisling Gallagher has expressed her deepest condolences following the death of Savita Halappanavar last month at University Hospital Galway. Her husband Praveen has publically stated that Savita was refused an abortion. A vigil organised by Alliance for Choice will be held at Belfast City Hall today to remember Savita. Aisling Gallagher stated that choice must be a right for all women and that government must act urgently to ensure this.

Following the announcement of a rise in the number of people claiming unemployment benefit, NUS-USI President Adrianne Peltz has called for urgent action from the Stormont Executive, and also said that Education Maintenance Allowance must be protected. Information released estimates that the unemployment rate for people aged 18-24 is 23.5%, which is up 5.2 percentage points over the year.

Following news that thousands of adult apprentices are set to be denied training funding, NUS-USI President Adrianne Peltz has condemned the cuts saying she will be quizzing the Employment and Learning Minster, Stephen Farry, on them as well as last week’s proposals for cuts to Education Maintenance Allowance when she meets with him on Thursday.
