The UKBA have raised the level of English Language required to B2 on the Common European Framework of reference in speaking, listening, reading and writing for students coming to study at a Higher Education Institution (B1 for those coming to study all other courses). This is expected to create complications for those already offered places assessed under a different criteria.
Those coming to study Eglish for the first time and studying a specific English Language course (i.e. who would not have a level of English at B1 or B2) would be able to apply for a student visitor visa for 11 months. This would mean that entry level ESOL students from outside of the EU would not show on the immigration statistics these measures are set to lower.
A document was released today featuring clarification of this and on frequestly asked questions they have recieved on the impact this will have.
The UKBA have invited NUS to submit evidence on how the impact of these changes on current and future students and we are also in contact wiht Universities Scotland and the HMIE on how these changes impact on the international student experience. Please get in touch and let us know what your thoughts are heather.mcknight@nus-scotland.org.uk
