Showcasing support for London 2012

As the Olympic Torch heads towards London we're just 10 days away from the start of London 2012 and to recognise the contribution that students' union have made to warming up the welcome for the Games and ensuring everyone who wanted to be involved in the Olympic spirit could be we have released another round of case studies.

The details below give you further information about the breadth of opportunities created by students' union and Be a Champion ambassadors.

  • Aberdeen - The students' union organised 'Race to Rio' an inclusive sports event that challenged students to run, cycle, canoe or use any other method to make up the distance from Aberdeen to Rio de Janerio
  • Brunel - Created a children's Olympic day as part of the students' union One World Week, inviting local school children to the campus to learn about different cultures, try new sports and take part in arts and craft workshops
  • FXU - Aiming to spread the Olympic excitement into the South West FXU students' union held a community day encouraging members of the local community onto the campus to celebrate London 2012
  • Leeds Met - Organised by their Be a Champion ambassador Leeds Met held an 'Intergenerational Games' day, bringing together students and elderly residents to play traditional and virtual games using the spirit of the Games
  • London South Bank - Having received funding from the Be a Champion scheme LSBU organised a wide-ranging series of events which aimed to empower our students in line with the Olympic and Paralympic values
  • Portsmouth - Invited 400 local school children to an event to create artwork inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic values that was then displayed for students and members of the community to view
  • Stirling - The students' union, supported by their Be a Champion ambassadors held an Olympic week, using each day to focus on different elements of the Games from sport to culture to internationalisation
  • UCL - Developed a Paralympic taster day which worked with a local charity to include a morning session on disability awareness, and afternoon taster sessions in three different Paralympic sports for local school children
  • Winchester - Inspired to create a focus on sustainability the students' union, alongside the local community, organised the 'Big Spring Clean' focusing on re-using and recycling as much of their waste as possible

Student movement condemns removal of January A-Level resit

Following the announcement by Education Minister John O’Dowd on A-Level changes, NUS-USI student movement President Adrianne Peltz said the announcement must ensure clarity for students and must maintain the integrity and transferability of qualifications. She said however that removing the January resit option for new A-Level students, and the potential change to the AS/A2 weightings were both very retrograde steps.
