Celebrate 150 days to go

Over the last year NUS has been supporting students' union and colleges across the UK to celebrate London 2012. Through the Be a Champion project we have given out over £16,000 worth of grants and have helped kick start over 80 projects that have been inspired by the Games.

These include:

  • Leeds University Union - currently our only Gold acrredited students' union who have been working with design students do create a countdown clock to celebrate London 2012
  • Birmingham City Students' Union - they held a international students welcome event themed around London 2012 and celebrating international cultures
  • Canterbury College - have been embedding the Olympic and Paralympic values into everyday college life, all under the banner 'Fair For All;
  • Exeter Guild of Students - held a mother language day, using volunteers to support students with English as an additional language, through using acitivites inspired by London 2012
  • Solent Students' Union - ran a hugely successful British Week to engage students and the local community in celebrating all things Great Britain in a bid to boost support for Team GB
  • Surrey Students' Union - have been working in partnership with the University to create a "Celebrate Surrey" campaign to link in with their hosting of training camps before the Games
  • Swansea Students' Union - ran a poetry competition for students to celebrate the Olympic and Paralympic values through poetry
  • Trinity St Davids Students' Union - have developed 'Rooting for Change' an exciting tree planting initiative to spread the sustainability message of London 2012 and plant new trees in Kenya

Make sure you check out the case studies for each project to help give you some inspiration. Plus the Be a Champion website has a whole host of ideas for activities that you can pick up and run with or signpost students towards.

If you're still not sure what to do contact Fiona Ellison - 2012 programme manager in NUS Charitable Services.
