Fair to Care Motion for College and University Carer's Strategies

Model Motion for Students' Associations.

NUS Scotland Women's Campaign has produced a model motion which you can use in order to introduce a carer's strategy at your university or college. Introducing comprehensive carer's strategies at colleges and institutions which formally recognise carers and their excepetional cirumstances and commit to supporting those students with caring responsibilities, is central to the Fair to Care? campaign.

NUS Scotland Women's Campaign believes that to improve the opportunities and  prospects for carers at college and university, institutions must recognise the support, both financial and pastoral, that carers require. This is in order for them to have an equal chance of entering college and university, and remaining there. Download the motion here and  get your insition on board with the Fair to Care? campaign.

What can Students' Associations do to help?

There are lots of different things that you can do at your institution to help the campaign. Here are just a few ideas:

  • Raise the issue at Student Council and with the Executive of the Student’s Association using the model motion which can be found in NUS Connect Resources;

  • Encourage student carers at your students’ associations to take part in the online students carers forums by emailing Kelley.temple@nus-scotland.org.uk;

  • Set up meetings with and lobby local MSPs to raise the issue in the Scottish Parliament;

  • Publicise the issue by emailing all students and promoting Fair to Care? through Facebook, Twitter and other social media;

  • Encourage students to sign up to the Fair to Care? petition which can be found at: http://www.petition.co.uk/fair-to-care/ and carers to sign up to the forums;

• Utilise posters and flyers which the NUS Scotland Women’s Campaign can provide and get a space for the campaign on your students’ association website.

If you have any more ideas or any questions contact Charlotte Lawley at NUS Scotland.
