The postgraduate campaign has created a new pack of resources to support unions who wish to campaign against increases to taught postgraduate fees in their institutions.
Government fee policy reducing teaching grants to English institutions has resulted in increases to taught postgraduate fees of 24 per cent across the board in 2011. Institutions in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are likely to feel the knock-on effect. We must resist further increases.
We are asking unions to do three things:
-
Resist fee increases locally as far as is possible and where fees are set to increase, use this as a platform to campaign on improvements to taught postgraduate financial support and academic provisions.
-
Gather intelligence and help us map trends – what are the debates, concerns and ideas around taught postgraduate finance at your institution?
-
Push your university management to raise these issues publicly in a national forum, whether via your mission group, with Universities UK, or direct to government and/or the media.
This resource pack will help you to:
-
Understand why PGT fees are increasing
-
Conduct research into the potential impact of fee increases that will help you to make your arguments
-
Plan and execute your campaign
-
Make your arguments against fee increases
