It was in a packed conference room at the University of London Club, Gower Street, on 11-12 February 1922, that the National Union of Students was created, and Ivison Macadam elected its first president.

Now, 90 years on, we reflect on the flourishing history of our national union, the pivotal role it has played in enhancing students’ lives, and the great progress made by students’ unions over the years.

Over the next year we will be celebrating our history, kicking off with a parliamentary reception later this month, hosted by Jack Straw MP, NUS President 1969-71. This event will bring together past and present officers, staff and friends of NUS, giving the opportunity to reminisce in a suitably distinguished setting.

In April, National Conference will have a special 90^th anniversary theme, and delegates will get the chance to hear from Stanley Jenkins, NUS’ oldest surviving ex-president, who was in office from 1949 to 1951.

At the end of the year, Mike Day, Director of Nations, will be launching his book on the history of NUS.
