Welcome to the Neighbourhood takeover of NUS!
This week, we will be sharing a number of resources on all things housing and community for students’ unions on www.nusconnect.org.uk, and a number of new advice and features pages for students on www.nus.org.uk.
Why is this important?
Since Grant Shapps’ change to legislation in September 2010 that granted local authorities individual power to restrict the development of HMOs (via an ‘Article Four Direction’), we have seen a number of local authorities opt to introduce this change.
Areas include:
Newcastle, Hull, York, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Preston, Northampton, Oxford, Canterbury, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Exeter.
Unless, as a movement, we demonstrate the value of students in the community, we will continue to see more attacks on our right to live where we choose.
