NUS LGBT letter to IGLYO Board of Directors

NUS LGBT is an affiliated member of the International LGBTQ Youth and Student Organisation IGLYO.

We recently learnt that IGLYO intend to hold one of their events in Tel Aviv. NUS has  been and will continue to be an active member of IGLYO; previous LGBT Officers have served as board members for IGLYO and as a campaign we engage with their conferences, study sessions, publications and more.

The NUS LGBT Committee meeting of March 2011 unanimously mandated the NUS LGBT Officers to lobby the IGLYO board members to reconsider their decision to hold IGLYO’s General Assembly in Tel Aviv.

The NUS LGBT Campaign has a proud democratic policy record and history of working to support LGBT people and students in Gaza and Palestine. Policy was passed in 2009 – ‘Love without Borders: Expanding the Campaign’ and reaffirmed in 2010 – ‘Love without Borders’. NUS generally also now has a policy stance against the occupation of Palestine.

Below is a link to the letter that we have sent to the IGLYO board stating our policy position and objection to the location of this event.

Letter to IGLYO from NUS

It’s vital that we take a lead from those who face oppression in their own country. We are therefore standing in solidarity with alQaws, Aswat and PQBDS in calling on IGLYO to reconsider holding the GA in Tel Aviv. This solidarity action will mean that if the location does not change NUS LGBT has taken the decision to not attend as an act of protest.

Below is a link to the letter written to the IGLYO Board from these organisations.
