Last week saw the coming together of over 75 international students, and international students representatives for the International Students Conference 2011. International Students Conference led the way in the four day democratic whirl that is Student Sections.
The conference started with opening remarks from the International Students Officer, Christina Yan Zhang, who was subsequently re-elected to the post the following day. Christina addressed the excellent work this years campaign had done, and also looked forward to some of the challenges ahead.
Delegates then split off for a variety of excellent workshops to help inform them about key policy areas. Delegates from all over the world were discussing and deciding about what the key issues are for the next year of international students and how best to solve them. This led into the policy discussion & creation session, where delegates then used the information they had just aquired to create motios to be debated the following day.
Finally, after a good dinner, delegates attend the final activity of the day - an informal hustings. This saw all the full time international students officer candidates pitching themselves against each other, so delegates could see more about what each person had to offer.
The second day was all about democracy - delegates debated, voted and elected to their heart's content!
Overall, we had an excellent conference - we hope those who attended did too, and those who didn't are making sure they come next year!
