Student retention is a key concern and focus of attention within the higher education policy field, having long been an area of interest for institutions, funding councils, the government and academics. A wide range of data and analysis exploring related issues has built up over the years.
NUS, students' unions and institutions need to collaborate to ensure that the students who are most vulnerable receive the support they need to help them succeed in higher education. In order to do this effectively, we need to understand the number and characteristics of students who leave higher education before completing their degree, and why, and have a good understanding of the measures that have proved successful in improving retention rates.
