Green Impact Students’ Unions (GISU) is NUS’s flagship environmental accreditation programme for Students’ Unions around the country. The purpose of GISU is to encourage, nurture, reward and celebrate environmental good-practice in students' unions. The programme comprises a list of criteria, each delivering a practical action that will help the union to reduce its impact on the environment. Unions simply work through the list of criteria marking those that they meet, collecting the points along the way. The criteria fall into different categories ranging from procurement, energy usage, waste control, through to campaigning and policy and commitment. The programme ends with a fantastic gala dinner awards event. For extra support unions can join GISU through our E&E opt in group; please click here for more information.
In 2011/12 over a 100 unions took part in the programme. The large commercial Union of the Year went to Liverpool Guild of Students, Bradford University Students’ Union bagged the small commercial Union of the Year, and Bangor Students Union took home the non commercial Union of the Year award.
