Diversity of religion and belief is a major aspect of a campus community and good relations on campus are of vital importance. Students’ unions are at the forefront of engaging well with this agenda and NUS is working to support you in this. We hope that this toolkit will offer you a key resource for strengthening good relations in your institution.

Good Inter Faith Relations on Campus: A toolkit for students' unions  has been written as a source of support and guidance to help students' unions:

  • consider the issues in the wider context and their role in building good relations
  • assess the state of existing inter faith relations and resources on their campus
  • develop a plan for supporting good inter faith relations
  •  think about initiating a student inter faith forum and organise regular student-led inter faith activities
The toolkit provides a series of case studies and exercises to illustrate effective models of engagement with faith groups; provide inspiration for your own events and projects; and help you to organise these. Also provided are ideas for training and workshop activities for you to use with other officers, faith societies, inter faith forums and students generally.

This toolkit is for students' unions in both further and higher education institutions.

Each students' union will be recieving a copy of the toolkit within the next week. Please contact Kat.Luckock@nus.org.uk if you have not recieved a copy of the toolkit by 18 April 2011.

What next?

For staff, chaplains and students' union officers in FE we will be organising a conference style training event in partnership with FBFE later in the summer, further details to follow shortly.

For staff and officers at students' unions in HE we are organising two training days on facilitating and leading inter faith dialogue and activities, with a particular focus for National Inter Faith Week 2011. Similar to our previous four National Student Inter Faith Forums held over the past 12 months, these training days will be an opportunity for you to network with other students' union staff, officers and students leading inter faith activities; share and develop ideas for inter faith events and projects; and gain new skills and knowledge with training from inter faith practitioners. The training days are on:

Tuesday 21st June at the University of the West of England, Bristol click here for more information

Tuesday 23rd August at Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds click here for more information
