Academic Representation
-
To plan, administer and deliver the course representation scheme, Academic-focussed Student Assemblies and other student forums as provided by Union policy and as may be required by the role.
§ Provide direct support to the Academic Sabbatical and Academic Team to deliver effective representation on specific issues as arising through policy mandates and Board items.

To plan, deliver and review academic representative training with the department Manager and in conjunction with the Volunteering dept.

To be the lead member of Union staff in developing the course representation system to be the most effective route of representation and communication it can possibly be to help achieve the Union’s vision.

To liaise and collaborate with University staff as appropriate to deliver the best possible course rep system, including the academic office, faculty staff and academic staff.

To maintain records and statistics of meetings, discussions, actions and outcomes as a result of Union academic representation

To report progress and outcomes of the representational portfolio to Union staff, officers, boards and committees as required

To support member feedback and communication projects as relevant to the role.

To support the planning and administration of Union campaigns as relevant to the role

Student Voice Systems
§ To plan, administrate, promote and support Student Voice activities within the University, such as supporting elected officials attending Academic Boards and Committees, conducting research and analysis of the National Student Survey, student involvement in University feedback and quality assurance activities etc.
§ To promote student voice opportunities to the membership, acting as the point of contact for any such queries
§ To liaise with NUS and other relevant bodies regarding academic representation and student voice operations e.g. attending NSS briefings, following developments within the Quality Assurance Agency, Guild HE etc.
§ To uphold and promote the Union’s values relative to effective democracy and equality & diversity.
§ To promote values of democracy throughout the course representation scheme through effective communication, briefing and liaison with University staff as appropriate.

Engagement

To recruit, train, develop, empower, support, value and recognise volunteers as the primary components of the Union’s representational work.

To be the key UCSU contact for Student Academic Representatives and associated stakeholders

To work in partnership with the Academic Sabbatical Officer to develop the student academic representation scheme

To work in partnership with the relevant University staff to ensure the Student Academic representation scheme is understood and valued by stakeholders and effective for all parties

To maintain databases of Student Academic Rep’s

To promote maintenance and later growth of student representative engagement with UCSU systems and processes

General duties
§ To uphold and contribute to the health and safety agenda of the Union
§ To support and contribute to the strategy and direction of the Students’ Union, promoting cross-departmental working with other managers, staff and officers wherever possible
§ From time to time, as required, to undertake, and/or support research projects for the development of the department or the Union as a whole
§ To support and advise student officers and representatives in the fulfilment of their duties
§ To contribute to the planning, delivery and review of the Union’s Strategic Plan and the vision set therein
§ To work in close and appropriate collaboration with Student officers to develop new schemes and projects and to help them formulate and achieve their goals and objectives
§ To actively contribute to the positive image of The Union with staff, Student officers, Students, the University and other relevant stakeholders

To attend and participate in staff and other Union meetings as required

To attend such training courses, meetings, conferences and events as relevant to the post or otherwise agreed

To identify, design and provide training sessions for staff and or officers as appropriate to the role

To fulfil any other duties as reasonably requested

To contribute to and support Union events such as Student Welcome and Induction events, Elections, Summer Balls and other one-off type events across all sites as reasonably required
Notes
1. UCSU considers ongoing training as essential for the development of both its staff and the organisation. It is expected that the post-holder will be able to participate in training opportunities that are relevant to his/her duties as outlined above.
2. This job description is subject to alteration at any point, pending consultation with the post holder.
3. The nature of the post will, at times, require additional commitment over and above normal office hours, including occasional residential conferences and training events, though it is not envisaged that this will ever be excessive. Payment for these hours is incorporated in the salary offered and time is managed through the flexible annualised scheme.
4. Some Union roles will require CRB clearance in order to safeguard children and vulnerable people with whom we work.
