Student As Governor, Leadership Foundation for Higher Education

After Brexit the consequences for higher education are as unclear for us as for the rest of the country. As a student governor, your role will become key in the success and sustainability of your institution. Here at the Leadership Foundation, we are pleased to offer you support with our Student as Governor seminar.

Registration and refreshments will be available from 09.30 with the programme starting promptly at 10.00. The day will close at 16:15.

What does the seminar offer you?

We understand that you have the difficult task of balancing traditional responsibilities towards the student body with new responsibilities for the corporate governance of your institution, at a time when universities and colleges are recognising a new contract with their students.

Student as Governor is designed to facilitate discussions, group activities and support student board members to work together to forge an effective governance role that will serve all stakeholders.

You will hear from keynote speaker Jim Dickinson, Chief Executive, Students' Union at University of East Anglia (UEA) who will be sharing his experience on what being a student governor is really all about.

Dr Paul Greatrix, Registrar and University Secretary, University of Nottingham will talking about governance in higher education institutions and how it works.

We’re pleased to confirm that we’ve got a panel discussion on how effective university governing bodies are, and how well the sector is really performing. We’ll be joined by Lucinda Parr, University Secretary at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Rachel Holland, President of University of Leicester Students' Union and Mark Leach, Director at Wonkhe

This seminar has strong networking element and we hope that afterwards you will continue to connect and encourage others to become interested in the work of their governing body. The seminar complements the acclaimed NUS summer training programme.

A participant from last year’s Student as Governor seminar said:

“I wish I had had the opportunity to attend this event before my first year as governor. Engaged and inspired”
