Changing Alcohol-Related Behaviours

About

Changing alcohol-related behaviours is a complex and challenging task requiring carefully planned and targeted interventions. This collaborative workshop day will be an opportunity to explore the ISM behaviour change tool, which was launched by the Scottish Government in the context of their Climate Change Plan. It has since been used in many scenarios including in designing effective interventions as part of the NUS Alcohol Impact programme.

ISM is a practical tool, which allows us to think beyond the individual to consider all of the contexts that shape people’s behaviours - the Individual, the Social and the Material. By understanding these different aspects and the multiple factors within them that influence the way people act every day, more impactful policies and interventions can be developed.

The support day will be led by Andrew Darnton, the creator of the ISM model, and his team of trained ISM facilitators. In interactive sessions, delegates will map out alcohol-related ‘problem behaviours’, and design potential interventions to deliver back on campus.

Participants should come away from the day with a better grasp on the practice of behaviour change, as well as specific insights for alcohol-related interventions, and the confidence to use the ISM tool with colleagues across their institutions.
