In partnership with the Learning Skills and Improvement Service (LSIS), this course has been developed for elected officers of FE students’ unions.
This introductory course aims to enable officers to gain skills and knowledge in all aspects of their role. From being a leader of a democratic organisation,a trustee, to a representative of the student voice and a campaigner for better student rights and student experience at college.
Who is it for?

Full time FE officers from English affiliated students' unions

Delegates who attend the course will:

Examine the different roles of a student leader in a further education students’ union, as well as the skills needed to be an effective student leader

Define why students’ unions exist and what the core purpose of a union is
-
Explore how individuals work in teams and practice teamwork skills
-
Demonstrate and apply knowledge about current national legislation relating to safeguarding and positions of trust relevant to their role

Describe how and to who safeguarding concerns should be reported to and where they can get support
-
Demonstrate their meeting skills and develop a best practice checklist

Examine the role of student representation, both individual and collective, and how to collect the learner voice. As well as considering students' union representative structures and how they work

Identify NUS democratic processes and how their unions can get involved in setting national policy

Identify who college students are and what their rights are. As well as beginning to look at the role of a student representative in promoting, defending and extending student rights

Plan how to lead campaigns that achieve change that promotes, defends and extends the rights of students

Practice their presentation and public speaking skills

Participate in a simulated exercise that tests the skills and knowledge gained over the course
All trainers who deliver this course have a wealth of knowledge of the FE sector and many years experience of working with FE Students’ Unions between them.
Delegates who attend this course will be supported and coached through the course, enabling them to fully engage with the content of the course whether they are in plenaries, tutor groups or the simulated exercise.
Throughout the course delegates ideas, discussions and debates will be positively challenges to enable them to look at a topic more deeply and from all perspectives.
