Welsh Labour should 'stick to its guns' in Supporting Students

NUS Wales believes that the UK Labour Party needs to be more ambitious in dealing with higher education funding and that Welsh Labour needs to keep to its election commitment to support Welsh students with the cost of fees, wherever they choose to study in the UK.

University Challenge has been the first major document that the Guild has produced to shape Academic Policy throughout the institution and has so far been well received. The document ties in with the Annual Submission to the University and will hopefully contribute to the building of the Student Written Submission on the institutional review.

 
NUS Wales - Influencing Tuition fee policy

On Wednesday 16th March, the National Assembly passed two sets of regulations relating to tuition fees: The Student Fees (Amounts) (Wales) Regulations 2011 and The Student Fees (Approved Plans) (Wales) Regulations 2011.

These regulations essentially set a basic tuition fee level of £4,000 and a higher tuition fee level of £9,000, as well as describing the broad objectives that institutions will have to meet in their tuition fee plans. The Minister for CELL made a statement to the Assembly and

Full time undergraduate tuition fees in Wales

The Westminster Government has decided to increase tuition fees in England because they are cutting the teaching budget for English universities by 80%. This means that there will be a cut in the Assembly’s budget for higher education here in Wales. As a result, Welsh universities put significant pressure on the Welsh Assembly Government to increase tuition fees in Wales, in order to fill the gap left by the budget cuts.
