Endsleigh Student of the Year

Winner: Lisa Marshall, Bournemouth University Students’ Union<

Judging Panel: Raechel Mattey - NUS Wales Deputy President, Chris Shelley – NUS  Head of Democracy and Governance, Sara Newell – Student Business Manager at Endsleigh, and Martin Doel – Chief Executive, Association of Colleges.

Sara Newell gives us a bit more background behind the decision to select Lisa as their winner. 

Congratulations were shared over Twitter when we found out that Lisa couldn’t make it to the ceremony as she was carrying the Olympic tourch the next day!

Student Journalist of the Year

Winner: Tom Flynn

Finalists:  Nicholas Carding - Sheffield Students' Union, Tom Flynn - University of Bristol Union, David Parker - Sheffield Students' Union.

Judging Panel: John Gill – Editor THE, Rob Wotton – Sky Sports News Presenter, Chris Maples – UK Managing Director Spotify, Paul Coffey – Industry Leader at Google and Toni Pearce – Vice President Further Education.

John Gill provides an insight into why the judges chose this winner. 

Tom showed real commitment to the development of student media on campus. He spent a huge amount of time delving in to complex campaign issues, reviving the newspaper with online developments and inspiring others to become great journalists; all whilst completing his final year.

Simpson-King Students' Union Staff Member of the Year

Winner: Paul Chapman, Birmingham City Students’ Union

Finalists: Ceylan (Jay) Sakallioglu - Union of Brunel Students, Paul Chapman - Birmingham City Students' Union and Ryan Bird - University of Bristol Union.

Judging Panel: Amy King, Becky King and Jon Simpson.

“All entries were of a high standard but Paul Chapman was a clear winner for us because he has created a series of activities that have brought the Union and the University closer together and he has done that in, really, quite a difficult environment. These are activities that they can share with other unions.” Jon Simpson

Community Relations Award

 

Winner: Hull University Union

Finalists: University of Essex Students’ Union, Edinburgh University Students’ Association and Hull University Union.

Judging Panel: Mark Brian – BUCS, Dame Mary Marsh – Founder of Clore Leadership Foundation, Terry Ryall – Chief Executive VInspired and Raechel Mattey – NUS Wales Deputy President.

Hull University Union caught the eye of the judges through the “clear strength in the work within the local community”. Judges said that the winners “managed to defend students in a hostile situation whilst maintaining a positive relationship in the community”.

Higher Education Students' Union of the Year

Winner: Hull University Union

 

Finalists: Sheffield Students' Union, University of Exeter Students’ Guild, University of Sussex Students’ Union, Hull University Union and Leeds University Union.

Judging Panel: Matt Hyde – Chief Executive NUS Group, Liam Burns – NUS President, Nicola Dandridge – Chief Executive Universities UK and Andy Westwood – Chief Executive Guild HE.

Campaign of the Year

Winner: MidKent College Students’ Union

 

Finalists: University of Bristol Union, MidKent College Students' Union and University of Abertay Dundee Students' Union.

Judging Panel: Dannie Grufferty – Vice President Society & Citizenship, Fran Williamson – Paralympian, Sarah Veale – Head of Equality and Employment Rights Department, TUC and David Babbs – Chief Executive 38 Degrees.

The campaign for better travel, organized by MidKent College Students’ Union, was described by the judges as “successful” and “outward focused”. The judges were also highly impressed with the quick response to changes, stating that “[MidKent College Students’ Union] listened to students” and planned a “flexible and strategic campaign”.

A flood of celebratory messages came in for MidKent College Students’ Union when they were presented with the first award of the night:

Further Education Students' Union of the Year

Winner: Canterbury College Students’ Union

 

Finalists: Walsall College Students' Union, Canterbury College Students' Union and Worcester College of Technology Students' Union.

Judging Panel: Raechel Mattey - NUS Wales Deputy President, Chris Shelley – NUS  Head of Democracy and Governance, Sara Newell – Student Business Manager at Endsleigh, and Martin Doel – Chief Executive, Association of Colleges.

Equality and Diversity Award

Winner: Leeds Metropolitan University Students’ Union

 

Finalists: Kent Union, Leeds Metropolitan University Students' Union, Aberdeen University Students’ Association.

Judging Panel: Dannie Grufferty – Vice President Society & Citizenship, Fran Williamson – Paralympian, Sarah Veale – Head of Equality and Employment Rights Department, TUC and David Babbs – Chief Executive 38 Degrees.

The judges described Leeds Metropolitan University Students’ Union as a union that had “solid achievements with real effects on their student’s lives”. They were impressed with how “activity translated in to changes” and how the union “changes culture through zero tolerance in the SU bar”.

Best Student Media

Winner: Forge Media

 

Finalists: Forge Media - Sheffield Students’ Union, Sports Byte - University of Sunderland, York Vision - University of York.

Judging Panel: John Gill – Editor THE, Rob Wotton – Sky Sports News Presenter, Chris Maples – UK Managing Director Spotify, Paul Coffey – Industry Leader at Google and Toni Pearce – Vice President Further Education.

Paul Coffey from Google tells us a bit more about why they selected the winner.

Forge Media demonstrated that they are genuine multi-media organisation, pulling in hundreds of volunteers across the student body. Paul was particularly impressed with their creativity, stating that “across every media they’ve achieved phenomenal audience growth”.

Their use of multi-media was evident following the presentation of the award, here are just a few of the comments that appeared on our live feeds:

Students’ Union Club or Society of the Year

Winner: Warwick Economics Society

 

Finalists: Warwick Economics Society, Swansea University Students’ Union Dance Society and Leeds RAG Club.

Judging Panel: Mark Brian – BUCS, Dame Mary Marsh – Founder of Clore Leadership Foundation, Terry Ryall – Chief Executive VInspired and Raechel Mattey – NUS Wales Deputy President.

Warwick Economics Society, described by the judges, had a “clearly outstanding year” that resulted in a huge increase in membership and allowed them to develop a creative and diverse programme of events that benefitted both students and the community.

Dame Mary Marsh provides more background in to why Warwick Economics Society won Club or Society of the Year.

Endsleigh Technology Innovation Award

Winner: Staffordshire University Students’ Union

 

Finalists: Staffordshire University Students' Union, Walsall College Students' Union and University of York Students' Union.

Judging Panel: John Gill – Editor THE, Rob Wotton – Sky Sports News Presenter, Chris Maples – UK Managing Director Spotify, Paul Coffey – Industry Leader at Google and Toni Pearce – Vice President Further Education.

Staffordshire University Students’ Union created an accessible financial tool for prospective and current students, which is a fantastic achievement both on campus and in their community. Their creative approach to problem solving has put this union ahead of the game, involving students at every stage of development.

Chris Maples explains their decisions for selecting Staffordshire University Students’ Union as winner of the Endsleigh Technology Innovation Award.
