Which of our demands in our New Deal for the Next Generation made it into Party manifestos?

This week saw the publication of the Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat and Green manifestos – and we’ve been going through them to see whether any of the these parties are committing to any of our New Deal for the Next Generation campaign asks. The result shows some amazing wins, and this is a testament to the outstanding campaigning of students and students’ unions over the last year.

We’ve put together some key highlights to show where our campaigning has influenced Party manifestos:

Liberal Democrats will:

  • Commit to lowering the voting age to 16
  • Maintain the Disabled Students Allowance
  • Make citizenship and age-appropriate sex and relationship education compulsory

The Green Party will:

  • Provide free local public transport to young people and students ✔
  • Restrict stop-and search powers from the police ✔
  • Ban unpaid full-time internships lasting more than four weeks ✔
  • Introduce compulsory sex and relationships education ✔
  • Repeal the Health and Social Care Act ✔
  • Reinstate Education Maintenance Allowance ✔
  • Scrap letting agent fees ✔
  • End zero hour contracts ✔
  • Introduce a national Living Wage ✔

The Conservatives will:

  • Commit to a national post-graduate loans system for taught masters and PhD courses ✔

Labour will:

  • Commit to lowering the voting age to 16
  • Ban exploitative zero-hours contracts meaning those who work regular hours for more than 12 weeks will have a right to a regular contract ✔
  • Repeal the Health and Social Care Act ✔
  • Develop an independent system of careers advice which offers face-to-face guidance ✔
  • Repeal the Lobbying Act ✔
