Wednesday 22-04-2015 - 14:21

Shelly Asquith has been elected as NUS Vice President (Welfare) at National Conference 2015.

Speaking to conference floor in her election speech, Shelly said: "When I first went to University I dropped out due to finance issues. Free education isn’t just about freedom from tuition fees, it’s about freedom from poverty. We need to fundamentally change the system.

"Growing up in a single parent family relying on benefits I know the importance of the welfare state, and it’s intrinsically connected to education - I’ll call for a new funding system.

"I’ll organise with you against cuts to counselling and to DSA. We need to see institutions which are able to deliver well-funded support."

Shelly Asquith was elected NUS Vice President (Welfare), with the vote count being:

434 – Shelly Asquith
305 – Cat Turhan
12 – RON (Re-open nominations)
