#ReclaimBlackStories is NUS Scotland Black Students' campaign to share the reality of Black history and what it's like to live in Scotland at the moment - as told by Black students.

#ReclaimBlackStories: Dominique

As cliché as it may be, the most influential person in my life is my mother. My father passed away very early in my childhood and consequently, I was raised solely by my mother who, after the death of her husband, had to find time to grieve, keep a home together, and raise and provide for two children alone. She taught me (and is still teaching me) how to be courageous when facing adversity and to stand for what I believe in, even if I am the only one standing. Given the issues facing black people today, particularly back home in the U.S., these lessons become more and more relevant every day. I am grateful for my mother’s guidance and support, all of which contributed to making me who I am.
