Commenting on the announcement of financial support for Master’s students during the next academic year, NUS Wales President Fflur Elin said:
“Postgraduate study is extremely important for students to get advanced expertise in their subjects, and in turn, contribute a huge amount to the economy and wider society.
“For years, NUS Wales has been calling for financial support for postgraduate study. No one should have to choose not to undertake a postgraduate degree because of money.
“I am very clear that everyone in Wales should be to have access to, and thrive in, education, including at postgraduate level, whatever their background.
“That is why we cautiously welcomed the Welsh Government’s commitment, in response to the Diamond Review, to introduce a postgraduate loan system.
“However, that is not due to be implemented until at least 2018/19. The long wait between now and then could mean Welsh students being priced out of the market.
“We are therefore pleased that the Welsh Government will be introducing an interim scheme for the next academic year – starting this September.
“This scheme must support anyone in Wales who wants to access postgraduate study to do exactly that, regardless of financial situation and personal circumstances.
“In the same way, when the permanent scheme is introduced in due course, it must offer students sufficient support to cover course costs and maintenance.”
