At the NUS Wales LGBT+ conference in Cardiff today, students have elected Hannah Stewart as their LGBT+ Officer (Women’s Place) and Jasper Williams as their LGBT+ officer (Open place) 2016/17.
Today’s conference was the largest ever, with the most motions submitted, and the highest number of Unions represented.
The LGBT+ Campaign is the autonomous campaign for all students in Wales who self-define as LGBT+. The campaign represents those students’ interests as part of NUS Wales and campaign locally and nationally on issues that affect them.
The role of the LGBT+ Officers is to act as the campaign’s figureheads, serving on a part-time basis for a year, and sitting on NUS Wales National Executive Committee.
Speaking after the election, the new officers outlined their campainging priorities for the year ahead.
At the NUS Wales LGBT+ conference, students debated motions on, among others, supporting rural students' unions and representation of Ace and Trans students, took part in a community politics workshop with Edith Whitehead from Bite The Ballot, and elected their leaders.
Those elected to the NUS Wales LGBT+ Campaign committee were:
- Steering Officer - Sarah Lynn
- Committee member (Open) - Carl Tubbs
- Committee member (Bi* place) - Daisy Welham
- Committee member (Trans* place) - Alexander Grant
- Committee member (FE place) - Austen Wright
- Committee member (Women's place) - Ruth Lewis
Tomorrow, we move on to the NUS Wales Welsh Language Campaign conference.
