NUS-USI has secured a huge win on part-time undergraduate higher education student funding in Northern Ireland.
NUS-USI, working alongside students’ unions, has helped ensure tuition fee grants are retained and also helped deliver a new non-means tested top-up fee loan for part-time undergraduate study.
Fergal McFerran, president of NUS-USI, said: “This is an extremely significant development for part-time undergraduate study opportunities in Northern Ireland. The new system, when implemented, will provide an opportunity for people to gain help with their tuition fees through the new loan, and importantly it also retains the means tested fee grant too.
“It is important that people can afford to undertake part-time study, as the flexibility part-time study provides is essential for many people who have work or caring responsibilities.
“An investment in students as an investment in a fairer society. I am pleased to see the issue of financial support for part-time students on the agenda and I welcome this announcement, which goes some way in ensuring that robust support is in place to make higher education as accessible as possible. This is an example of the kind of investment necessary to ensure students are adequately supported to play their role in allowing Northern Ireland to thrive.”
