NUS Scotland has welcomed the appointment of Professor Peter Scott as the Commissioner for Fair Access, a post created from recommendations by the Commission on Widening Access.
Commenting, Vonnie Sandlan, President of NUS Scotland, said:
“We’re delighted to hear today’s appointment, and look forward to working closely with Professor Peter Scott to deliver the recommendations of the Commission on Widening Access, and working together to achieve our ambitions for fair access. Professor Scott clearly has a long and distinguished career in education, and brings a huge amount of knowledge and passion for education and fair access.
“While fair access remains a national priority, we still have much more to do before we truly realise the ambitions that we have rightly set ourselves. Part of that undoubtedly rests with having the necessary leadership, drive and vision to push our government, universities and colleges to secure greater progress through bold action – and the appointment of Professor Scott is a significant part of securing that.
“We know that education is a transformative experience, for individuals, communities, and Scotland as a whole, and the responsibility to ensure that it’s in reach for every child in Scotland is incumbent on us all – and today’s appointment marks a milestone on that journey. We wish Professor Scott the very best in the role, and look forward to working closely with him, and pushing forward with the bold action we need to deliver the fairest possible chance at education for all those with the potential to succeed.”
