NUS National Conference: the next four years

Tuesday 25-08-2015 - 12:12

NUS announces the dates and venues for National Conference 2016-2019.

We’re pleased to announce that National Conference - the largest democratic gathering of students in the world - will take place in Brighton for the next two years (2016 and 2017), before Glasgow becomes our host city for the following two years (2018 and 2019).

Key dates

  • 19 - 21 April 2016 – The Brighton Centre, Brighton,
  • 25 - 27 April 2017 – The Brighton Centre, Brighton,
  • 27 - 29 March 2018 – The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), Glasgow
  • 8 – 11 April 2019 – The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), Glasgow

Since Blackpool in 2008, National Conference has moved cities every two years – taking in Newcastle, Sheffield, and Liverpool - all of which are cities based in the North of the UK, we have chosen a location further south for the next two years.

We appreciate that for those universities and colleges that aren’t central there will always be a greater amount of travel expected and for that reason we try vary the cities which is why we are pleased to confirm we will hold National Conference in Glasgow in 2018 and 2019.

Considerations made when deciding host cities

When making a decision on the venue we have to factor several key points which include;

  • The conference must take place before May
  • Where practically possible it must be held within the school holidays
  • Where practically possible we avoid major religious holidays
  • A venue that has sufficient reasonably priced hotel rooms in close proximity

For the next two years we have not managed to secure a time within the school holidays due to a number reasons which includes hotel availability and dates the venue could not offer but we have managed to avoid major religious holidays. For 2018 and 2019 we managed to secure a time within the school holidays* and avoid major religious holidays.

*School Holidays – This may not be within school holidays for all local councils and may vary depending on which Nation you are in

Why Brighton?

The Brighton Centre is one of the largest purpose built conference and exhibition centres in the South of England. It is situated on the seafront and within 200 metres of major hotels and restaurants and near transport links.

The Brighton Centre has successfully hosted major conferences such as political party conferences and TUC Congress.

Why Glasgow?

The Scottish Exhibition Conference Centre (SECC) is superbly situated in Glasgow, Scotland's largest and most vibrant city. It is close to the town centre and near transport links.

The SECC has earned an enviable reputation for successfully staging all kinds of local, national and international scale events based on the outstanding technical support and the creative use of superb space which can be tailored to our needs.

Both cities are looking forward to welcoming NUS National Conference and NUS is looking forward to staging the largest democratic gathering of students in these cities across the next four years.

Registration for National Conference 2016 will open in December 2015.
