Union of UEA Students pick up Diversity Award for its ongoing commitment to equality and diversity.
The Union of UEA Students have received the Diversity Award at this year’s NUS Awards in recognition of their leading work in the field of equality and diversity.
Over the past year, the union has taken great leaps in widening participation by rethinking its democratic and staffing structures; introducing new sabbatical, committee and staff roles which champion welfare, community, diversity and liberation caucuses. Moreover, the changes have lead to shifting attitudes and practices across the university, too.
The union has seen the change brought by this first hand on its campus; securing policy commitments from the university including sexual harassment and mental health, witnessing a significant rise in students’ engagement through the union and NUS, and recently by receiving national award recognition for its work.
What the judges said about the Union of UEA Students:
‘Examining and changing the governance and staff structures will lead to cultural and systemic changes, and better sustainability of diversity initiatives.’
Four other students’ unions also featured in the shortlist of nominees for the Diversity Award, with the University of Strathclyde Students’ Association being named runner up.
The NUS Awards are an annual celebration of the enormous work which students’ unions, officers and staff do. For more information about the other NUS Award winners from the night, please visit www.nusconnect.org.uk.
