Following the Belfast High Court ruling that Northern Ireland’s abortion legislation is in breach of human rights law, NUS-USI Women’s Officer Jo Gowers said this clearly illustrates the urgent need for a change in legislation on abortion. NUS-USI has been working to deliver a change in the abortion law, and believes that it is essential that Northern Ireland meets human rights standards immediately.

NUS-USI Women’s Officer Jo Gowers said: “I welcome this ruling, and it is absolutely essential that abortion law here is changed immediately.

“It is staggering that Northern Ireland does not currently allow abortion in cases of rape, incest or serious foetal malformation.

“It is crucial that legislation and services are responsive to the needs of women. This is an issue of equality.

“Women’s rights are human rights and it is absolutely essential that Northern Ireland meets its human rights obligations and that legislation to address this is delivered immediately.”
