Hi my name is Vonnie Sandlan and I am NUS Scotland President 2015-16.
This is my second year as a full-time officer for NUS Scotland, as I was previously NUS Scotland Women’s Officer. I’ve studied at both college and university in Scotland, studying an HNC in Early Education and Childcare at Langside College, during which time I was also President of Langside College Students’ Association. I then went on to study BA Childhood Studies at the University of the West of Scotland.
This year my focus for the year will be around the Scottish Parliamentary Elections, making sure that students are registered to vote and that we’re making bold asks to the political parties around student support. I’m also a member of the Scottish Government’s Widening Access Commission, making sure that we’re improving access to education, particularly for those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
As well as our work around the Elections and to improve widening access, I want to make sure that we have a strong student movement and that students are able to get involved with the work of NUS Scotland. This year I’ll be leading a piece of work looking at how we change our internal structures to make them more accessible, and more representative, of students in Scotland.
Outside of work I’m also a mum of four amazing children, a Scout leader and sit on the board of Who Cares? Scotland, a national voluntary organisation providing advocacy, advice and support services across Scotland for children and young people with experience of care.
