Keynote speakers announced for National Conference 2017

Wednesday 19-04-2017 - 18:28

High-profile figures from the UCU and Black Lives Matter will join an award-winning filmmaker and a student activist behind the #BursaryOrBust campaign on stage at our annual conference in Brighton next week.

We’re delighted to announce that Sally Hunt, Prentis Hemphill, Ahmad Al-Rashid and Danielle Jade will be addressing delegates at National Conference in Brighton.

Each of our four guests will take to conference floor during day one of National Conference. Here's a little more about their work and when they'll be speaking...

Sally Hunt

Sally is the General Secretary of the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) – representing 116,000 teachers, lecturers and researchers, she is the leader of the largest trade union for further and higher education workers in the world.

When? 12.15pm, Tuesday 25 April

Danielle Jade

Danielle is a student at the Royal College of Nursing who founded the #BursaryOrBust campaign which has highlighted the government’s draconian plans for the health sector and amplified the voices of nursing and other healthcare students who face the prospect of graduating with at least £51,000 of debt and working in a sector on life support.

When? 12.15pm, Tuesday 25 April

Ahmad Al-Rashid

Ahmad is a campaigner from Aleppo who contributed to the award-winning film ‘Exodus: Our Journey To Europe’. He sought asylum in the UK so his wife and young daughters - one of whom he had never met - could join him and live a life safe from conflict back home in Syria. Ahmed spent two months trying to reach the UK and documented his time spent in the back of a lorry whilst being smuggled into the country.

When? 12.30pm, Tuesday 25 April

Prentis Hemphill

Prentis is the Director of Healing Justice at Black Lives Matter. Prentis has spent the last several years working to articulate the connection between liberation and personal transformation through teaching and hands on healing and counselling work with groups and individuals.

When? 7.00pm, Tuesday 25 April
