Candidates for NUS Vice President (Welfare)

Wednesday 24-02-2016 - 16:00

The period of nominations for the position of NUS Vice President (Welfare) has closed and we can now announce the candidates standing for election.

The candidates for the position of NUS Vice President (Welfare), who will be elected during NUS NUS National Conference, are as follows:

Shelly Asquith

I'm seeking re-election to continue building a Welfare campaign that prioritises defending students' rights and access to vital support services.

This year, I've taken on high rents, NHS cuts and the Prevent agenda. I've worked with SUs, trade unions and Liberation campaigns to mobilise and deliver a series of successful projects.

We've made big steps on the issues that matter, but there is so much more to do.

I believe I have the experience as a student, SU officer as well as NUS VP to build the strong coalitions we need to not just fight - but to win.

Munya Mudarikiri

I have been an elected officer at my students union for two years and in that time I have helped build a progressive, diverse and impactful students union that has helped transform the student experience for the better. With prevalent mental health issues, accommodation increasing in cost and decreasing in quantity, welfare services stretched and underfunded on and off campus, and PREVENT threatening student freedoms; Student unions can no longer allow the division within the NUS to undermine the strength of our student movement; let’s move forward to a brighter, more inclusive and united Student Movement.
