It will take the average university student over 30 years to pay off their student loans. How will you look when you stop paying for your education?
The debts that students face increase every year, and the burden will only get worse with the government’s decision to scrap maintenance grants and as a result of the spiralling cost of student living.
That’s why this week is the #CutTheCosts Week of Action. It’s your chance to help demand that politicians reduce the burden of debt facing students.
Today is local press day, when we are encouraging students’ unions to contact their local media. Tomorrow is the #CutTheCosts Westminster Lobby, which will see students from around the country meeting their MPs in Westminster. Wednesday and Thursday will see students writing to their MPs and taking public action. Finally Friday is Parents and Family Day, when students will look to get their families involved in the campaign.
Throughout the week, we are trying to make it as clear as possible how much of a burden debt will be for this generation of students.
You can add a personal twist by showing your MP how long it will take you to pay off your debt – thanks to the AgingBooth app!
Here’s how you can get involved:
- Download the AgingBooth app – available on iPhone and Android
- Take a selfie!
- Use the app to reveal how you will look when you’re older.
- Upload the photo to Twitter using the hashtag #CutTheCosts and your MP (if they are on Twitter!) – you can find out who your MP is on theyworkforyou.com
To kick things off, here’s what NUS National president Megan Dunn, NUS Vice President (HE) Sorana Vieru and NUS-USI President Fergal McFerran will look like once they have paid off their student debt!
